Norwest Roars with Walking With Dinosaurs

Norwest provided a comprehensive system for this ground breaking show of life size Dinosaurs touring Australia-wide in large arenas. Based on the BBC series of the same name this larger than life show tooks its audience inside the world of the dinosaur era.

Audio designer Scott Willsallen took up the challenge of creating a system that would position sound around the arena floor so that the realism of the dinosaur sound effects would not be affected by the source of the sound coming from the speaker system rather than the dinosaurs.
To achieve this Timax Imagemaker was used extensively. Because of the complexity of the show and the huge number of cues involved SFX Pro Audio show control was used to drive the show via a Yamaha M7CL digital recall console.

An extensive number of radio microphones and in ear monitor systems was supplied by Norwest Productions not only to send signal to the PA from the on-board samplers which generated the sounds in each dinosaur but also to send an receive control signals for the complex animatronics that made the creatures so life like. The sound system was a complex multizone distributed system comprised of: 32 x EAW KF860 and KF861 16 x EAW SB1000 subwoofers 24 x EAW KF750 full range trapezoidal cabinets 12 x Zeck T3 passive 12”/1” speakers arrayed as rear effects

All Speakers, including subs flown in a 2x8 centre mono block, were flown using twenty two rigging points. The entire system was powered using thirty two of Norwest’s newly acquired Labgruppen fp10,000q four channel amplifiers.
