Beijing office rocks with Sonic Youth
Norwest Productions provided audio for two
dates by American rockers Sonic Youth. The first date in Beijing
was at Star Live which has its own in house production based around
a D&B Q-series line array with Yamaha PM5Ds at front of house
monitors. Beijing office manager Aaron Mason looked after the band
for the show and provided ancillary requirements in the form of
Shure in ear monitor systems and specialised microphones to meet
the band’s requirements.

The
second date, the following night, was in the Shanghai Concert
Hall where a full system was required. Norwest CEO, Chris Kennedy,
had made an arrangement with Nicolas Kirsch, South East Asian
sales manager for Nexo, to use their GeoT demonstration rig
for some upcoming dates to asses the demand for the product
and the viability of Norwest purchasing either GeoT or GeoD.
Arrangements were made with Top Plot International Limited,
Nexo distributors for China and Hong Kong, to assemble the system
for the Shanghai date. This was more complicated than it at
first appeared as the system had spread out with some in Beijing,
some in Shanghai and the balance in Punya about 1,500kms South
of Shanghai. The equipment in Punya was trucked to the Top Plot
agents in Shanghai and Norwest collected the Beijing equipment
and loaded it into a 20’ truck along with Norwest consoles,
monitors etc for freighting to Shanghai. CEO Chris Kennedy traveled
to Shanghai the day before
to ensure everything arrived and all components of the system
were there and fully functional. |

A wrinkle appeared in the middle of these
best laid plans in that it was discovered that large trucks cannot
enter the centre of Shanghai between the hours of 7am and 8pm without
a permit. Attempts to obtain a permit in the short time remaining
were unsuccessful……we live and learn for next time.

The Shanghai based equipment was trucked (in
a small truck) to the venue at 4pm only to discover that the venue
was doing “routine maintenance” and that we could not
load in until 7pm. Finally by 9pm all equipment had arrived and
been loaded into the venue and the system was up and running by
midnight.

Aaron, and Nicky Balshaw,
traveled to Shanghai next morning having looked after the Beijing
show the night before. Chris Kennedy had already returned to
Beijing for meetings first thing that morning. The changeover
all worked, the stage was mic’d up, sound checks completed.
The band rocked to a full house that night with all parties
going away totally happy with the world at large.
The overall production management was handled by Simon Leeds’
company 3bm (Norwest partners in Beijing) who provided lighting
and stage equipment for both shows |
