Norwest makes it “four in a row” with the MTV Video Music Awards 2008

Norwest has done every MTV Australian Music Video Award ceremony since they started. This year producer Ean Thorley looked high and low for a venue that was to be both different and edgy. He found it in the form of Bays 12-14 of Australian Technology Park. This National Trust classified building was originally the old Eveleigh Railway Yards. Although converted to multi-use space and substantially renovated Bays 12-14 retain almost all the features of the original industrial heritage. All these pluses, needless to say, come with a minus – it is an acoustically hostile space and provided a considerable challenge to the Norwest audio design team of Ian Shapcott and Ewan McDonald. The challenge was met and the audio was the usual Norwest very high standard.

To add to the challenge the room was set in the round. Four clusters of six Adamson Y10 were hung as L/R arrays facing North and South which were the longest throw. On the Western side, a shorter throw, were two clusters each consisting of four Adamson Y10 with two underhung Spektrix. The Eastern side had the ramp to the stage taking up a significant portion of the area so the team hung two arrays of EAW KF650 to complete the coverage. A total of twelve Adamson T21 subs were groundstacked in clusters two high around the stage.

Because the broadcast audio is a major part of the MTV Awards a completely separate speech system was deployed shooting across the room from East to West. The four main arrays consisted of four of the new EAW KF720 powered, and Gunness focused, compact line arrays. Delays and infills for this system were RCF ART322i.

In the foyer was a system consisting of ten RCF ART322i with two EAW SB1000 subs. At the red carpet there was a third system based on RCF ART322i to provide audio to the grandstand.

There were eight bands including The Veronicas, Pot Belleez, Wyclef and The Vines using a total of twenty one rolling risers provided by Megadeck. Changeovers happened flawlessly greatly assisted by Norwest’s extensive inventory of L&K multi-pinned stage boxes and multicore cables.
